Tasting just the malt components made it clear how Yoichi and Miyagikyo behave differently in a blend. It seems you can feel Yoichi in the spice, the substance, and the faint smoke, and Miyagikyo in the orchard-fruit clarity and floral lift. The blend evolves with a lot more nuance than I expected with the textures intentionally layered.
